We must meet our school's needs with an approach that is environmentally sustainable and strengthens local communities. Our garden has three aims, (1) to create an outdoor classroom where students can engage in exciting, high-quality, hands on learning in subjects including math, science, wellness, and business, (2) to foster a stronger sense of community through the creation of a green, communal space and (3) to prioritize the sustainable vision for our school where students are committed to bettering themselves, their community, and their environments.

Southern Penobscot Regional Program

Our school is unique in that it is a program serving some of the most challenging students who are still in public school. All of our kids are recognized as special education students and are here working on anger management, conflict resolution, impulse control and cooperation in a life skill setting. Our class is composed of an amazing set of kids from grades 7th to 12th with Autism. We are calling our garden "The Autism Garden: Growing Community Awareness". I will first explain the community needs we hope to serve and then discuss the goals of the garden.

We are currently approved as a pilot project by the Washoe County School District to expand the garden by replacing turf with a native habitat and food forest, also making it more energy efficient for our high desert climate. Funding has been secured to remove the turf, purchase the plants and install the watering system. This grant will allow us to purchase the materials needed to maintain the garden once installed.

Lambert Public School

The goal of our program is to seek student involvement while building toward a much larger goal being a student operated farm where not only produce but livestock would be raised. The immediate goal of this initial project is to use the context of a garden to instill a sense of ownership, responsibility, work ethic and community into all students involved. The planting and harvesting of crops and produce is an added benefit to this program.
