About the Program:

We are currently approved as a pilot project by the Washoe County School District to expand the garden by replacing turf with a native habitat and food forest, also making it more energy efficient for our high desert climate. Funding has been secured to remove the turf, purchase the plants and install the watering system. This grant will allow us to purchase the materials needed to maintain the garden once installed. This grant will make it possible for us to acquire crucial equipment such as shovels, sprinkler heads, hoses, drip irrigation, and seed starting materials for students to utilize. Securing this equipment will allow us to move forward with the process to expand the garden space in order to model sustainable gardening to students and community. This grant will ultimately help Reed to reach its goal of increasing student awareness of where their food comes from while linking common core standards to garden based education that is appropriate to our climate.
