Merritt Secondary School

This grant will make it possible for us to construct and fill raised beds, store our tools and materials (currently taking up space in the greenhouse) and provide space for us to work. Our goals are to set up our greenhouse and raised bed gardens for sowing in the spring of 2014; next winter, we plan to have the greenhouse producing cold resistant crops all winter for us. We will use our produce to supply our school cafeteria and one of our local sponsors has told us they will buy all of our excess produce. (Brambles is a bakery and restaurant)

The mission of the garden is to inspire and teach the students about growing food in the garden and to mentor them to become good stewards of their environment. We want them to understand the basics of gardening so it becomes something common and within their reach. We give hands on presentations/lectures on soil, water, insects, composting, winter and summer maintenance and planting for winter weather, which is our reality.

Our goal for this year is to solidify and expand the existing garden program so that a greater number of students will have the opportunity to experience garden learning in their classes and after school programs.

Y.O.U., Inc. Educational Day Academy

The YEDA garden currently includes tomatoes, several types of peppers, and a large planting of basil. In addition to these raised beds Peter and the students have created an herb garden containing three different types of basil, rosemary, garlic and onion chives, thyme, tarragon, chocolate and spearmint mint and oregano. This project would allow the team to expand their vegetable offerings, since there is ample room to expand the number of raised beds on the school property.
