Kitchen Classrooms

White's Junior/ Senior High School

Our goal is to involve our "at-risk" youth in the establishment, maintenance, and harvest of a series of gardens. Through this, they will enjoy fresh air and sunshine while learning how to garden. It will provide emotional healing and self-esteem as they watch their garden grow. It will give them opportunity to work with teachers and staff, providing opportunities to talk while working in this informal setting. They will learn about plants and how they grow in relation to achieving healthy, sustainable gardens.

Language Academy

Led by unpaid parent volunteers, Language Academy’s garden program started with a mission to engage students and teachers by inspiring students to respect nature and learn where food comes from. Each class, K-5th, visits the garden for grade-specific lessons. Classes spend an hour, rotating through a Science/gardening lesson, nature play and hands-on nutrition ecology. We create our own curriculum using California FOSS standards as often as possible. This year our garden program will teach 30 classes of more than 775 students. Our school is Title One school with 1,000+ students, K-8th.

Detroit Waldorf School

Detroit Waldorf School's Wellness at Waldorf program was developed with the primary mission to strengthen and build our community around the conversation of food.

We have a wonderfully diverse population, both within our student body but also our facility and we created this program to share stories and education around food, nutrition, nature and wellness. As Detroiters, we address food equality issues, as well as nutritional education in a mindful manner that is approachable and accessible to all.

Austin Discovery School

We began a small garden when we started our school in 2005. Since then we have developed an entire eco-wellness program that is now part of our core curriculum. We use this garden, in tandem with our composting system and chicken coop, to teach our students a holistic approach not only to science, but to everyday life. Each of our grade levels are responsible for maintaining portions of the garden for the school year as part of the learning process.

Rio Mesa High School

The goal of the Student Garden at Rio Mesa High School is to become a resource designed to teach students with disabilities about sources of healthy foods and the dietary choices that lead to better health, as well as building a foundation for a student-run business. The business will directly benefit students by affording them activities in the community that will increase their access to the curriculum..

Pathfinder K-8

Our garden exists to serve as an outdoor classroom that supports and extends curriculum in the school, builds school community, and encourages awareness around growing and eating nutritious food.

St. Stephen's Academy at Glade Run Lutheran Services

Glade Run Gardens serves as a therapeutic, vocational, and educational program for children throughout Western Pennsylvania. Students at St. Stephen's, Glade Run's private licensed school, participate in horticulture programming as part of their curriculum, learning about plants and the natural environment and developing a love of nature. For children in residential treatment at Glade Run for emotional health issues, the gardens serve still other purposes: horticulture therapy and a vocational program.
