Language Academy
Led by unpaid parent volunteers, Language Academy’s garden program started with a mission to engage students and teachers by inspiring students to respect nature and learn where food comes from. Each class, K-5th, visits the garden for grade-specific lessons. Classes spend an hour, rotating through a Science/gardening lesson, nature play and hands-on nutrition ecology. We create our own curriculum using California FOSS standards as often as possible. This year our garden program will teach 30 classes of more than 775 students. Our school is Title One school with 1,000+ students, K-8th. The school’s diversity score and minority enrollment are more than the California averages. My goal for our program and this ESY training is to learn how to transition our garden into a teacher-volunteer based program enabling classes to visit more. I hope to be equipped with new ideas for nutrition, garden expansion and exposing kids to a love of gardening who otherwise do not have the opportunity.
