Garden Classrooms

Fairmount Elementary

With the Whole Foods Grant, our school will build additional garden areas to teach children to: 1- eat healthy foods through the garden; 2-make responsible choices for their own nutrition and to protect the planet; 3-increase their science literacy (as little science time is allocated in a Spanish Immersion school); and 4-involve parents with their children’s education.

Seatack Elementary

Our community garden project will focus on the essential question, "How do we empower children and adults to live sustainably in order to positively affect the world?” A variety of organic vegetable gardens and fruit trees/bushes will be planted and maintained on underutilized school grounds to be used as educational tools as well as a source of food for our school community. We will plant vegetables, herbs and fruits trees that are accessible to the students, allowing them to learn about where food comes from while also providing healthy snacks.

Floyd Middle School

The Garden Club at my school is operated primarily by a combination of special education classes. These classes contain students with varying levels of cognitive abilities. Since the students all have intellectual disabilities, it is important for them to learn functional skills that will help them develop into contributing members of their community. The goal of the garden at Floyd is the get all students involved in horticulture by providing hands on learning experiences.

Free Horizon Montessori

Free Horizon Montessori school will be "growing" an adopt-a-plot program this fall where each classroom will take lead on a establishing and maintaining a garden bed under the guidance of our lead teachers and a cadre of dedicated parent and faculty volunteers. This gardening program will consist of approximately 14 raised beds distributed around the school's 4.8 acre property. Each garden bed will have at least one dedicated adult sponsor who takes the lead on its cultivation and works with our students (preschool through 8th grade) to provide the plot with the TLC it needs to thrive.

Ampark PS 344X (PS/MS 95X) Neighborhood

The WITS Tower Garden will be the primary feature of the WITS Green for Kids program, with the goal of increasing environmental awareness and develop sustainable practices in public schools. Because the Tower Gardens are mobile, students can connect to nature anywhere in their school, year-round. The Tower Gardens will be featured in the WITS Green Labs, hands-on educational classes on sustainability topics; used to support the WITS Culinary Labs; and also made available to teachers for use in their curricula.

Arroyo Vista Elementary School

We want to start a garden revolution in our community - by teaching students how to grow and harvest our own food and to enjoy the taste from the garden directly to the plate. Even learn some business tactics along the way, by encouraging our little entrepreneurs to have our very own Farmer's Market at our own school. We will consider our garden an outdoor classroom. The garden will help us provide creative and effective Environmental instruction and it will enrich language arts, math, science and social studies.

Brookside Elementary

Our goal is to provide our students with an understanding of the source of their food and an opportunity to explore the natural world, meanwhile linking their garden activities to California common core standards. We have an excellent curriculum which connects planting and harvesting activities to standards in Math, Science, English and History, all the while interesting kids in eating healthy home-grown foods.

Lillian M. Dunfee School

The goal for our school garden is to educate the children about healthy, locally grown food that they have a hand in planting and growing.

Canfield Elementary School

The grant will help us build an Outdoor Kitchen in our gardens to improve our nutrition lessons. Students will:
*Cook with food from the garden
*Participate in cooking lessons with local chefs
*Learn healthy recipes to share with their families

Carl Schurz Elementary

We have recently established our Healthy Lifestyles Committee at Carl Schurz Elementary. It is our goal to show our kids a what it means to live a healthy life. Our garden plays an important role in accomplishing this goal. Nearly 18 classes (approximately 20 students per class) receive training from local Master Gardeners once a month. They are working towards a certification "Growing a Vegetable Garden Specialist." The garden provides an outdoor learning environment and a place to foster a love for nutritional heath, science and math.
