Fairmount Elementary
With the Whole Foods Grant, our school will build additional garden areas to teach children to: 1- eat healthy foods through the garden; 2-make responsible choices for their own nutrition and to protect the planet; 3-increase their science literacy (as little science time is allocated in a Spanish Immersion school); and 4-involve parents with their children’s education. Besides building additional vegetable gardening beds on our two-story blacktop (3 distinct areas, each larger than a baseball field), the grant will allow for family activities on the weekends which combine literacy, garden volunteer days, and extend garden learning into the home. With the majority of our community living in poverty, we have an active food bank program, and the garden can teach families how to grow and choose fresh, healthy food. With Whole Foods funding, it will be clear that we have a GREEN school yard with children able to speak to the GREEN importance in two languages.
