Floyd Middle School
The Garden Club at my school is operated primarily by a combination of special education classes. These classes contain students with varying levels of cognitive abilities. Since the students all have intellectual disabilities, it is important for them to learn functional skills that will help them develop into contributing members of their community. The goal of the garden at Floyd is the get all students involved in horticulture by providing hands on learning experiences. We would like to expand and increase the amount of our produce in order to donate to the local food banks within our community. In order to expand, we will need tools such as shovels, hoes, supply cart. We also will need pruners, spades. In addition, we require ongoing soil amendment such, mushroom compost, mulch, garden soil, seedlings, and seeds and enough gardening tools for students and teachers. Overall, we would like to promote the need for healthy eating habits to echo the push from federal initiatives.
