Garden Classrooms

OKC Harvest

Oklahoma City Harvest is a non profit program of Oklahoma City Beautiful.  We are committed to providing Oklahoma City neighborhoods, schools and community centers with opportunities to plan, grow, maintain and harvest fruits and vegetables using sustainable and environmentally sound gardening practices.  Whenever possible we do this free of charge to the recipient.

Fresh Roots

Fresh Roots envisions a world where everyone has access to healthy food, land, and community. We cultivate engaging gardens and programs that catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community celebration. Fresh Roots enact our mission through Schoolyard Market Gardens, educational farms where the food we grow is sold into the school community: into the cafeteria, food access programs, and to our neighbours.

Montessori Magnet at Moylan

We are a public Montessori school in the South End of Hartford, CT.  We currently have two campuses, with gardens at each campus.  Children at our school range in ages from 3 to 12.  At every level, they start seeds, maintain gardens, harvest and eat !  We are looking to expand our facilities within by 2016 to offer more garden and cooking opportunities within our school.

Gardens of Well-B.E.A.N. (well-Balanced, Exercise and Nutrition)

Forty First grade and thirty ESE Pre-K students synergized as "Budding Buddies" to grow and harvest vegetables in raised garden beds. The nutrition garden called, "Synergy Soup and Salsa Garden," is one of three garden projects featured at Fred Wild Elementary. Forty fourth grade students planted a sensory/butterfly garden (gardening for balance). These gardens were added to an existing nature/fitness trail. The overall theme of our gardens is based on developing student leadership through gardening. We are a "Leader in Me" school and teach Covey's 7 Habits.

Horace Mann Elementary School, (Mann Gardens), Washington DC

Horace Mann Elementary has has had a school garden for over 20 years, growing our curriculum out of our science program.  During this time our gardens have changed location many times but have continued to grow despite disruptions to physical locations. Today we utilize the gardens throughout our curriculum and have increased our focus on wellness and healthy eating. We are currently completing a two year building renovation but have continued gardening in our vegetable and native gardens.

The Sage Garden Project is sponsering me this year, but I work as a Garden Educator for Explore Ecology.

Explore Ecology is an environmental education and arts non-profit located in Santa Barbara, CA.  We work with over 30,000 children a year, inspiring them to engage with the natural world, think critically and experience the value of environmental stewardship. Our programs include the Art From Scrap Creative ReUse Store and Gallery, Environmental Education, the Watershed Resource Center, School Gardens Program, and ReUseSB.

Cape Fear Farmacy

Vision: To create and sustain a community garden for the production of food for those hungry in body and a place of beauty for those hungry in spirit. The community gardens are an avenue for sharing gardening knowledge, promoting self-sufficiency, providing healthy and productive activities for our youth and fostering a greater sense of community in Wilmington and surrounding areas. Partnership with local businesses and nonprofit organizations will ensure growth and continuity of the gardens.

Emerson Community Garden

The Emerson Community Garden was constructed in the spring of 2013. It was started with the support and passion of our late principal Dan Bergman. Parents and teachers have worked together to build a progessivley more sustainable garden science program. One goal of the program is to be able to have the garden open for exploration during rescess. We believe this is a time for free exploration and a chance to find ownership and responsibility. Another goal is to implement hands on science through the garden.
