About the Program:

The Emerson Community Garden was constructed in the spring of 2013. It was started with the support and passion of our late principal Dan Bergman. Parents and teachers have worked together to build a progessivley more sustainable garden science program. One goal of the program is to be able to have the garden open for exploration during rescess. We believe this is a time for free exploration and a chance to find ownership and responsibility. Another goal is to implement hands on science through the garden. Through a partnership with Wasatch Community Gardens we have access to garden science curriculum for elementary students. So far this program is being implemented with parent volunteers assisting teachers in science lessons. Hands on science can become overwhelming for a single teacher, and our goal is to provide assitance and training to teachers in order to make them more comfortable and excited about teaching science, and learning outside.
