Lower Elementary

Rowayton Elementary School

The Garden of Life will educate all members of our diverse community to achieve their fullest potential in a safe, nurturing and mutually respectful environment that fosters responsibility and life-long learning. Interacting with the plants and landscape within our outdoor classroom will create a sense of environmental stewardship and establish practical, life-long skills. Working directly in the soil teaches our children about the world and its ecosystems around them. By studying the garden, we hope to engender a proactive relationship with health and wellbeing.

Pomaika'i Elementary School

Our goal is to create a sustainable outdoor classroom where the children can explore, witness and participate in endless oppertunities to learn about ecology, Hawaiian culture, nutrition and mutuial respect for each other, oneself and the natural world, among many other diciplines. We aspire to create a space that lends itself to all grade levels and all teaching styles. We aim to foster the enthusiasm the children demostrate by asking to participate in the school garden club and not have to limit their desires to participate due to space.

A Philip Randolph Career & Technical High School

A.P. Randolph is a public vocational school that strives to educate a generation of young Philadelphians with skills vital to our cities development. We are located in the heart of North-Central Philadelphia, a food-desert with some of the nations highest rates of diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition. These conditions are omnipresent in our student population, which is why we are dedicated to providing them with hands-on experiences with local, organic food production as a means of sustainable development.

Pearl Ridge Elementary

Our garden goals are:

(1) to educate and empower students and staff to take action on issues of hunger in their community while working with other students and organizations

(2) to apply problem solving skills in the planning, cultivation, harvest and distribution of crops

(3) to create a collective sharing of learning experiences about the garden (students teaching and learning from students and as well as community organization, staff, and family)

Melrose Elementary School

Melrose Elementary School contains the highest rate of free and reduced lunch students in Pinellas County Schools. It is also constructed atop a brownfield location capping a former hazardous waste site. Our goal is to construct a state-of-the-art modified huegelkultur raised beds with a surplus water retention, recycling, or off-site disposal system. A grant of $2,000 will help to pay for two-fifths of the materials costs of the beds and water management system. Combined with existing donations we will have enough funding to begin construction this year.

Campbell Park Elementary

In January 2103 we will be constructing a medium-sized modified garden in the Campbell Park Elementary Schoolyard. A generous grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation allows us to create the basic infrastructure. A grant from the WholeKids Foundation would allow us to fulfill our goal of completing the garden amenities including the installation of a water-conserving drip irrigation system, install a formal seating and education area, and establish an edible native plant garden associated with the vegetable garden.

Odyssey Academy

Our goal is to establish a raised bed garden for each of our interested students, families and community members. We believe that by engaging our whole community in this project we can improve neighborhood health, relationships, and school-community connections. Funds from this grant will allow us to expand the community garden program we currently have and add more trellises to employ vertical growing techniques, thus allowing us to increase our growing space and our yield. Our goal is to increase our gardens
