A Philip Randolph Career & Technical High School
A.P. Randolph is a public vocational school that strives to educate a generation of young Philadelphians with skills vital to our cities development. We are located in the heart of North-Central Philadelphia, a food-desert with some of the nations highest rates of diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition. These conditions are omnipresent in our student population, which is why we are dedicated to providing them with hands-on experiences with local, organic food production as a means of sustainable development.
Since June 2010, Randolph students have helped develop a local 3-acre urban farm with the Philadelphia Urban Creators (PUC), through which they have been developing skills in urban agriculture, sustainable design, and composting. The goal of this program is for our students to ultimately apply these skills to Randolph, and for construction students to build our own garden that science classes will maintain and culinary students will cook from each year.
With the support of this grant, we will grow all of our own food, recycle our own waste, and empower our students with vital skills that they can apply to their own communities and build community based systems of food-security throughout our city.
This program is supported by Philadelphia Urban Creators.
