School Cafeterias

Kalispell Public Schools, District No. 5 Flathead County

Kalispell Public Schools and FoodCorps Montana have partnered since 2011 in an effort to connect the approximately 6,000 students in District 5 with real food so they can grow up healthy. We work to achieve this goal through classroom nutrition lessons, garden-based education, and by building a Food Service Program centered on local procurement and healthy, from-scratch cooking.

District 5 currently hosts seven edible gardens and an orchard. Over the next few growing seasons, as the gardens expand, we hope to incorporate more of the harvest into the breakfast and lunch menu.

ESYNOLA, Samuel J. Green Charter School

As the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans' founding garden, the growing spaces at Samuel J. Green Charter School wrap around the school, encircling its students with reminders that the natural world inspires curiosity, and that beauty is the language of caring. Whether it's finding a quiet space in the butterfly garden to reflect, keeping an eye on the fruit ripening each day in the side yard orchard, or getting hands in the dirt in the main garden beds, Green's gardens inspire exploration and the sense that something truly wonderful might be just around the corner, or under the next leaf.

Riverside Brookfield High School

Our school garden is nicknamed, The End Zone Garden, because it is located next to the high school's football field. This high visability location has encouraged community participation and this summer we will be working with local Girl Scout Troops, parents and teachers to mantain the garden. The produce is used within the school cafeteria and our students and teachers use the garden as a learning lab in Science, Math, English, Art, Foods and Nutrition, World Languages and Special Education.

Maplewood Richmond Heights High School

On the edge of St. Louis, Missouri, the Maplewood Righmond Heights kitchen garden grows food for the public school district's Seed to Table cafeteria program. High school interns work the garden 8 months of the year, overseen by a staff member. The potager-style kitchen garden features a tool shed with a living roof, a brick outdoor oven, and compost facilities. The growing space is comprised of 4 x14 foot vegetable beds, border beds, and a fruit area. We are looking forward to a great growing season!

Grace Lutheran School

Our goals for Grace Garden are to create community service and educational opportunities and collaborative church and school relationships. This project will be service-oriented because a majority of the harvest will be donated to a local food bank. We will plant specific plants according to the needs of the food bank. As our relationship with the food bank grows, we may be able to do other service for them as a school.

Corvallis Environmental Center: Edible Corvallis Initiative

Our Farm to School programs makes connections between our food system and our school system. We work directly with school districts to procure and promote locally grown foods. Our program is working to increase the use of local foods, encourage our children to make healthy eating choices, and support regional farmers.

ESYNOLA, Arthur Ashe Charter School

At Arthur Ashe Charter School students eat their lunch while gazing out a picture frame of gorgeous, native and exotic shade plants, showcasing the school's kitchen herb and flower garden.

The Schoolyard Garden at the Academy for Global Citizenship

Environmental sustainability roots AGC’s education in the natural world. We believe that learning in harmony with nature provides opportunities to understand the relevance of our education. Learning from natural processes is a powerful vehicle for teaching our students about the connection between their everyday choices and the health of the community, the environment, and themselves.

Horta Educativa

The Educational Garden Project aims to strengthen the educational work aimed at the formation of social values, cultural and food compatible with the preservation of the country's culture, the environment and the promotion of healthy eating habits. It is an educational tool for understanding the relationship between the environment and healthy eating, linking them to health, citizenship and quality of life.

Horta Escola Lucy Montoro

Our goals are to transform children through multi-discipline garden education, allowing students to be their own teachers by promoting food education.

Horta Escola Lucy Montoro aims to be a living space for education, exercise, and care for the environment and community spirit. We grow vegetables, and plant seedlings of native tree species for landscaping and agricultural activities.
