Kitchen Classrooms

Fircom Farm

A rural farm located at Fircom, a retreat centre, outdoor school, wedding venue and summer camp on Gambier Island, BC.

Participants get their hands in the dirt to learn all aspects of gardening and wholesome food preparation.

The Carrot Academy

The Carrot Academy is an initiative to offer alternative classroom like experiences to youth at our LOVE Building facility. A traditional Academy event allows children to go out into the garden and work with plants, weed and harvest, compost and plant. They then take some of  their bounty into the kitchen, prepare their meal and sit down and talk about a topic related to their self sufficiency, self esteem and sustainable food systems. Then they wash up and put their dishes away.

Kid's Cooking for Life

~~Kids Cooking for Life (KCL) is dedicated to empowering young people to enjoy the benefits, pleasures and skills of cooking healthy food; promoting longer, healthier and happier lives. It was developed to teach children how to cook and prepare healthy meals with the aim of preventing and reducing childhood obesity and equipping youth and their families to make mindful decisions about food.

Springhouse Green

The reinvention of our food system is now part of the national dialogue with employers, employees, and communities at large looking to positively affect today’s concerns about escalating health care costs, food security and nutrition, personal and family health, community development, and “carbon footprint.” Springhouse Green offers simple solutions for greening corporate and community spaces with vegetable garden buildouts, nutrition counseling, lunch-and-learn workshops, garden maintenance services, and LEED applications.

Nokomis Elementary School

Nokomis Community Garden serves the adjacent Head Start program and elementary school of 380 students. The 2013 - 2014 academic term marks a point of transition from state funding (Nutrition Network for Healthy California) to federal/private funding for our program (FoodCorps). FoodCorps service member Keegan Niland facilitates garden/nutrition lessons for grades 1 - 5 both in-school and afterschool. Students, staff, and Keegan are collaborating this school year to care for the garden, promote healthy choices, and involve more volunteers.

Our school has joined the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, and we are in the process of setting up our Gardens and Kitchen with resources and support from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. Financial support is from the school, and assisted by donations from the community.

Cesar Chavez Middle School Garden Project

Established in 2009, our garden is a living laboratory that’s utilized to reinforce Common Core Standards, including science, math, history, and language arts while also providing an engaging environment to participate in the cycle of growing food.  The garden consists of a diverse array of fruits and vegetables. We focus on varieties of fruits and vegetables that are not only nutritious but historically and culturally significant, from heirloom beans, maize, quinoa, amaranth, and winter squash in the summer, to fava beans, wheat, kale, broccoli, and potatoes in the cooler months.
