Garden Classrooms

Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School

The goal of this project is to create viable lesson plans that integrate the garden into all subject areas. All of the workshops will be based on the theme of the classrooms and integrate the Common Core Standards in Language Arts and/or Math. These garden workshops will become an integral part of the classroom curriculums and become part of the culture of the school.

El Montecito School

Our goal is to have a vibrant garden to provide opportunities in gardening nutrition and to integrate curricula for each grade to enhance students' learning experiences. This grant will make it possible for that learning to happen now instead of several years from now. Our pre-schoolers will see seeds grow into food they can enjoy; our 1st graders will get a taste of the farming they read about in books and our 2nd graders will grow and touch plants they read about and study in science.

Egan Junior High School

Our goal is to 'complete'(of course gardens are never really complete!) the educational edible gardens at all 9 schools so that every classroom has garden space for their lessons and to equip each school site with tools they need to maintain their gardens. Each school proposal represents their particular needs based on their garden activities and the garden leaders. We want each school to have the means to grow healthy vegetables and fruits for years to come and for the Living Classroom

Edwin Markham Middle School

Our goals are to:.1. Educate elementary students about the importance of fruits and vegetables.2. Energize and excite them about produce.3. Introduce fresh produce into the diets of students and their families.4. Give schools access to a variety of resources and support to help achieve Goals 1-3.This grant allows us to maintain the upkeep of the gardens (youth volunteer incentives recruitment etc.) and instruct the Teaching Gardens curriculum (teacher stipends curricular costs etc.).

Edward D. Sadler Jr. Elementary School

The projects that will be undertaken with the grant money will also reach volunteers and parents strengthening the school community and the sustainability of the school garden program. Sadler has one of the highest percentages of students 92% who are eligible for free or reduced lunch indicating that this garden project is targeting an exceptionally venerable group of students that can stand to greatly from additional education and access to healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Edward "Babe" Gomez Heritage Elementary School

Last year our students planted maintained and harvested 3 raised garden beds. With the support of this grant we will be adding an additional 5 raised beds made out of old donated tractor tires with plans for a 6th additional area. Students sold the produce in the fall to help towards this year's cosst. With the expansion of our garden area we want to transition our school garden into a community building opportunity where parents-students work together to see great things happen w/teamwork

Edna Oliver Montessori Early Learning Center

Mile High Montessori has 6 sites with the opportunity to garden. Some sites have gardens that are not integrated into the program some sites have no garden. We will provide a gardening experience at each location that allows students to learn about vegetables and gardening to enhance their awareness of healthy food where it comes from and that the students can have a role in providing the food. The grant will offer family involvement as well as education around a gardening theme.

Edna Libby School

The goal of the school gardens is to teach students where their food comes from and how to grow it sustainably. The gardens serve as outdoor learning labs where students can learn through hands-on experiences that draw on a variety of subject matter. The food grown is used for taste testings in the school lunch program and in health classes thus improving the nutritional quality of the food as well as making healthy eating appealing. Produce is also donated to local food pantries.

Edith Cavell Elementary School

With the support of staff families and students another school in the West 1 CST's area has selected to increase awareness and promote active involvement around environmental issues as its goal this year. With this in mind the school community has pledged their commitment towards to installation of a school garden. The school garden will be incorporated into daily classroom learning for all grades and will act as community garden for the nearby high school and community centre.
