Sadler has one of the highest percentages of students 92% who are eligible for free or reduced lunch indicating that this garden project is targeting an exceptionally venerable group of students that can stand to greatly from additional education and access to healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Edward "Babe" Gomez Heritage Elementary School

Last year our students planted maintained and harvested 3 raised garden beds. With the support of this grant we will be adding an additional 5 raised beds made out of old donated tractor tires with plans for a 6th additional area. Students sold the produce in the fall to help towards this year's cosst. With the expansion of our garden area we want to transition our school garden into a community building opportunity where parents-students work together to see great things happen w/teamwork

Edna Oliver Montessori Early Learning Center

Mile High Montessori has 6 sites with the opportunity to garden. Some sites have gardens that are not integrated into the program some sites have no garden. We will provide a gardening experience at each location that allows students to learn about vegetables and gardening to enhance their awareness of healthy food where it comes from and that the students can have a role in providing the food. The grant will offer family involvement as well as education around a gardening theme.

Edna Libby School

The goal of the school gardens is to teach students where their food comes from and how to grow it sustainably. The gardens serve as outdoor learning labs where students can learn through hands-on experiences that draw on a variety of subject matter. The food grown is used for taste testings in the school lunch program and in health classes thus improving the nutritional quality of the food as well as making healthy eating appealing. Produce is also donated to local food pantries.

Edith Cavell Elementary School

With the support of staff families and students another school in the West 1 CST's area has selected to increase awareness and promote active involvement around environmental issues as its goal this year. With this in mind the school community has pledged their commitment towards to installation of a school garden. The school garden will be incorporated into daily classroom learning for all grades and will act as community garden for the nearby high school and community centre.

History of Project

Ecology Education, Inc.

Our current planning efforts are focused on ensuring that our programs remain of the highest quality even while we increase the number of students served and the number of programs we provide. A grant from Whole Kids will allow us to purchase gardening supplies seeds soil and other educational tools to ensure that we can continue to offer the kind of health-based education we provide at Ferry Beach Ecology School.

Ecole Saint Catherine's School

By the time each child has left our elementary school in Grade 6 they will have planted a seed harvested a vegetable and will have prepared and eaten a meal using food from the garden.

Ecole Elementaire Catholique Rene-Lamoureux

Our gardening goal is to increase access to fresh healthy food food growing spaces and food education in our community. Two challenges that our partner schools face with independent gardens are teacher time and summer maintenance. By including community partners and volunteers our goal is to share the work and the reward while learning about food together. By working collectively in public spaces we will learn from our diversity get to know one another better and enjoy delicious healthy food

Ecole Cedardale

We would like to have a school garden to teach the children about their food the environment their connection to the plant and animal world. We grew "a salad" with an assortment of vegetables in our little strip garden in the past two years. We shared our veggies with the whole school and it was a great success. The children were enthusiastic and loved the results of their labour. We would like to share the harvest with local families and neighbours as well when we have a larger garden.
