Garden Classrooms

Doyle Park Elementary School

We plan to develop a tradition in gardening that weaves all learning modalities into grade level core curriculum as well as teach respect responsibility and reciprocity. The students and families will learn about organic gardening nutrition education recycling and composting. We plan to supplement the school salad bar with fresh seasonal vegetables and provide our participating families with produce during the summer months.

Downtown Montessori Academy

Our Garden goal is to be able to establish a raised bed garden large enough so that the entire student body can participate in all stages of growing organic vegetables. Being able to do this would allow children in an urban environment who might otherwise have no opportunity to grow food learn how to garden and to directly benefit from being able to consume the foods they grow.

Douglas. L. Jamerson Jr. Elementary School

Our goal each year for our garden club is to educate our students on how plants are grown their needs for survival how to properly care for plants (fruits and vegetables) how to use the fruits and vegetables that we grow in order to eat healthier and how to ultimately grow and maintain their own gardens at home. This grant would enable us to purchase seeds soil and necessary tools for our club and to be able to afford to send seeds/seedlings home with our students to start their gardens.

Dougherty Valley High School

Providing our students a safe and social space where they can engage in positive interactions while gaining an understanding of how food is planted grown harvested and prepared. Learning about sustainability seasonality cooperative work respect for self and others and wellness through knowledge of healthy choices.

Dommerich Elementary School

The grant will help us expand teaching levels with wider varieties of veggies fruit trees citrus trees vining plants for our pergola (under construction) broader irrigation system not covered with current system. Broader experience of botany culinary and nutrition lessons. We need signs for the children to record what they have learned so others could read about the plants. We would like a permanent perennial bed so not every bed has to be replanted which would keep year round interest.

Dodson Montessori and Elementary School

Our goal with school partner Dodson Elementary is to create a transformative demonstration site centered on growing a healthy and thriving community in the most urban area of Houston. The funding will allow the creation of a school community garden that will engage families students and teachers. The school community garden will provide opportunities for hands-on projects that come alive increase fruit and vegetable consumption and create a green economy with farm to market school curriculum.

Dodge Park Elementary School

Dodge Park ES is nestled in an urban community right outside of Washington DC. Most of our children don't enjoy fresh fruit on a consistent basis. Our garden goal is the plant a garden that will allow Dodge Park (mainly 2nd grade and CRI) students to see and participant in the growing process from planting to eating while learning in an outside clasroom. Hopefully this will increase the healthy eating awareness for all students that will toggle over into home and the surrounding community.

Disney II Magnet School

Our garden will provide an opportunity for students from urban neighborhoods to engage in inquiry-based learning in topics including nutrition ecology and horticulture. It will also provide a basis for instruction on project management team building and allocating resources. Our garden will provide lifelong lessons to our students and their families about diet and nutrition as well as serve as a symbol of the partnership between parents schools and local businesses.

Dewey Elementary School

The goal of the project is to provide an organic edible garden space and outside learning environment that is wholly integrated into the school's curriculum. The garden will allow each student at Dewey school to be involved in every aspect of gardening and to make the connection between growing and eating healthy local food with the nutritional needs of growing healthy bodies. .Finally the garden will be the place to reinforce becoming environmental stewards.

Devereux Texas School

The garden spot has been fallow since 2009. We are anxious to revitalize the soil obtain additional tools and watering equipment and have enough to purchase seeds and plants for a spring 2012 garden. The funds will also revitalize the vocational education component that allows students to work in several outdoor setting and activities on campus. The mentally ill youth being served at Devereux will reap great benefits from the natural outdoor classroom that includes the garden.
