Our gardening goal is to increase access to fresh healthy food food growing spaces and food education in our community. Two challenges that our partner schools face with independent gardens are teacher time and summer maintenance. By including community partners and volunteers our goal is to share the work and the reward while learning about food together. By working collectively in public spaces we will learn from our diversity get to know one another better and enjoy delicious healthy food

The goal of our gardens is to teach our students to live sustainably. Our gardens are integrated into the curriculum and serve to support teachers' efforts in the classroom but moreover they serve to teach our children how to grow vegetable crops using organic methods. Further we intentionally planted a large seasonal vegetable garden at the front of our school with the intent of inspiring visitors to garden at home. The grant will sustain and allow us to make improvements to our program.

Hillcrest School

The garden goal for Hillcrest Vocational Agriculture is to grow hydroponic vegetables. This is the first time hydroponics will be used at Hillcrest School which is a center school for special needs students. The new system will make gardening more physically accessible to the students. We see the Sensory Garden as a chance to generate excitement about gardening about nature and about school. To engage the senses we are including plants that are beautiful that smell wonderful that have interesting texture and that taste good. We also will have wind chimes that sound lovely and bird houses to attract singing birds. We are applying for grants so that we can add more raised beds start a compost pile put in paths and install a rain barrel.

Highland Park Community High School

For decades students and faculty could find solace knowledge and inspiration from the Atrium. Unfortunately today the Atrium has has become a symbol of under-utilized spaces in inner cities and the decline in resources dedicated to inner city education. This proposal seeks to change that stigma and resurrect a gem of spaces. The Atrium garden due to its unique warm micro-climate(its indoors) seeks to grow fruits and vegetables that otherwise would not produce in outdoor Michigan climate

Highland Middle School

The grant will enable us to sustain this promising project and continue improving the health and bonding among students and community members alike. Our goal is to show students where healthy and safe food comes from and empower them with the skills and knowledge to grow their own food. Ideally they will share this information and invite more and more people to participate in the garden. We envision the garden as a central bonding and learning space in the community.
