This grant will allow our students to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables with a Woolly School Garden from planting the seed to harvesting the fruits of their labor. The garden will give us fresh healthy food for the kids to taste and take home. Being awarded the grant to establish a Woolly Garden will accelerate our ability to engage a greater number of students teachers and families in school garden projects and provide another food source for the community.

In the next year we hope to increase the garden-student interaction time and garden yield by extending the season by making PVC garden covers and providing a seeding system and grow box for each classroom. We also hope to integrate more garden nutrition and environmental curriculum into the classroom. This grant will help buy construction and classroom materials and provide curriculum assistance through the support of Food Corp.

Through the process of planning planting maintaining and harvesting the crops students become actively involved in learning about the foods they eat enhancing healthy eating choices. Additionally research suggests students show improved academic success with increased involvement in the school culture as such the school garden provides an opportunity for many kids who would be unable to attend after school hours to become involved in a club and engage in the school environment.

Creating raised vegetable garden beds at our school is helping us to learn about ecosystems in the real world, to learn about gardening and where produce comes from, and to have fresh produce for our lunch room. It allows us to donate to the community food bank and will help to make our school grounds greener. It will also allow for future learning about composting and water conservation. We are proud of the new garden shed and rain barrels that we added this year.

Our garden goal is to create a beautiful soup garden for the students and to share the bounty of the garden with two local Meals on Wheels organizations in the community. Students will research vegetables that they can grow to make their vegetable soup. Students will cultivate the land and plant vegetable and herb plants.
