Learning through gardening

'Value creating gardening' is in the initial research phase. Deeply inspired by Japanese educator, "Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's' theory of value creation I came across the Makiguchi project in action that was implemented in Brazil. This program dealt with using gardening as a tool for teaching academic subjects to students.

The mission of this program would be to introduce the concept of slow food and enable a natural learning for all students in urban & rural India. We will start with the urban context first.

FOLO

FOLO stands for Feed Our Loved Ones. FOLO Farms is run by six families on a mission to feed the world nutritionally power packed, bio-nutrient rich vegetables. Our farming methods are 100% organic, although we have not got round to getting certified organic status yet.

We have three farms in JB. Our first is a half acre farm at Kempas. This is a demo farm, where we do all our experimenting. This is the only farm open to public at the moment as we have built a proper events space/café here. We run events such as school tours, private workshops, cooking lessons.

Arroyo School Garden

The Arroyo Garden is a 4000 square-foot interactive, outdoor learning space that brings 4th and 5th grade curriculum to life-- from science to social studies, to reading and real-world problem solving. Through their garden lessons and work, Arroyo students develop their leadership skills and deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship. Best of all, the garden space is a fun, quiet place for meeting, reading, reflection and discovery.
