Farm Discovery at Live Earth

Who we are

Farm Discovery at Live Earth is a nonprofit organization working in the Pajaro Valley community to empower youth and families to build and sustain healthy food, farming, social and natural systems.

Our home, Live Earth Farm, is a 150 acre patchwork of working organic farm, riparian corridor, oak and redwood forest in the Pajaro Valley of Santa Cruz County, California.

What we care about

Frank Zeek Elementary Garden

Frank Zeek Elementary School Garden is a great place to grow!  Started in 1998 with a small "Garden in Every School" grant, it has grown into a full sized school garden.  We grow seasonal crops and eat everything we grow!

Hexter Elementary School Garden & Outdoor Classroom

Hexter Garden Mission

The Hexter Garden provides our students with hands-on experiences that support their academic success, their love of learning, and their personal wellness.

What we do:

  • Support academic success by partnering with teachers to provide an outdoor classroom for academic lessons emphasizing science and math, and incorporating literature, writing, social studies, music, and art.

Farm Table - All Local and Seasonal Cooking on the Farm

New Earth Farm is a nonprofit, working, sustainable and educational 21 acre farm growing high quality, unique heirloom produce, pasture raised duck and chicken eggs, pasture raised sheep, lamb and more.

Lakeside School at Black Kettle Farm

Since our move to Black Kettle in 2007, we have implemented a farm-based program, whose roots grow deeper each year. Our unique setting allows us the opportunity to experience an education based on the Waldorf philosophy in a deep and rich way. From animal husbandry to planting, tending, and harvesting their produce, children experience the seasonal food cycles of agriculture first-hand. Each fall, after the fall harvest is over, the children put the beds to sleep for the winter.

Science Alive

science Alive is a comprehensive garden and science program that teaches environmental stewardship, science, nutrition and basic garden skills to Theodore Judah elementary school population.

Farmer Frog

Farmer Frog is Branch of the 501c3 non-profit organization, Foundation for Sustainable Communities. We are promoting, supporting, teaching, and practicing intense urban and small scale agriculture utilizing cutting edge season extender technologies producing 365 days a year. Our organization was and continues to be inspired by Will Allen’s Growing Power model.

Holy Cross School Life Lab

Holy Cross School Life Lab provides experiential, outdoor garden activities to complement and enhance classroom learning in language, art math and science from pre-school through 5th grade.  It is maintained with the help of parent volunteers and classroom teachers.  Several of the raised beds are available to view outside our school building on School Street in Santa Cruz and are enjoyed by visitors to the Mission State Park as well as neighbors.

WHS Learn+Play Gardens (Wm. Hammerschmidt Elementary School)

Project Mission

The mission is to create a progressive landscape that includes updated play equipment, outdoor classroom zones including an Edible Garden, hardscape for recreation, and green space for active recreational sports as well as passive recreation and conservation opportunities to serve WHS students, neighborhood families and the greater Lombard community. Together, we are working to transform an ordinary schoolyard into a dynamic center for learning, health and fitness, conservation and community.

Edible Garden at Reflections Nursery & Forest School, UK

In 2009 one of the children in pre-school asked, “Where do chips come from?” another child replied, “From McDonalds”.  This discussion went on to prompt a project about potatoes.

Following on from this project, a discussion amongst educators resulted in our decision to create part of the garden into an edible landscape where children could learn about planting, growing, harvesting and the rhythm of the seasons.
