Farm Based

Scholars With Shovels at The Grande Innovation Academy

Scholars with Shovels is a community garden based out of The Grande Innovation Academy Schoolyard.  It is currently 2000 sq/ft with 10 garden boxes measuring 2x6.  We also have 6 chickens that were raised from chicks and are fed daily from the garden scraps (radish tops, pepper plant leaves, etc).  They roam free for about 5 hours during the school day and scholars are responsible for herding them back into their coup.  All grade levels have planted in the garden and continue to plant and harvest produce.  Recently we added an aquaponics garden, complete with Tilapia.

Nourishing The North Shore

Nourishing the North Shore (NNS) is a collaborative effort of the Newburyport Health Department, YWCA of Greater Newburyport and the Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center. Our mission at NNS is to build a resilient and connected community and ensure access to fresh healthy produce for all of those in the greater Newburyport area. Hunger affects our health in more than just a physical sense; it has a major impact on mental and social well-being.

CHESTER COUNTY FAMILY ACADEMY- Nature's Abundance School Garden Program

Nature’s Abundance Garden Program (created by Anne Stabb) was started in 2014 as a pilot program at Chester County Family Academy (CCFA), West Chester, PA.  With the support of the CEO, the Chester County Food Bank, and myself, we were able to provide hands on gardening lessons as well as fresh fruit and vegetables to low come income children and their families.

What We Do

World Food System Summer School

The World Food System Summer School has been running for 3 years and has an international pool of 100 alumni from 40 countries. The mission of the program is to create a global network of young leaders who have the knowledge and skills necessary to create positive change in their food system. We do this by offering a platform for experiential learning in culturally diverse and interdisciplinary settings that take systems approaches to addressing food, agriculture and nutrition challenges.

Green Animals Edible Schoolyard

Green Animals Topiary Gardens is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. It is among the exceptional collection of house museums and landscapes protected, preserved and presented by the non-profit organization, The Preservation Society of Newport County. Green Animals remains as a rare example of a self-sufficient estate combining formal topiaries, vegetable and fruit gardens, and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth, RI.

Renaissance High School Farm and Garden Program

Renaissance High School (RHS) Farm and Garden Program is a dynamic learning environment where students experiment growing their own vegetables, fruit and flowers in both an outdoor and greenhouse setting. We strive to teach horticulture and agronomic skill sets through an active hands on farm curriculum as well as a rigorous academic classroom component.

Promise of Peace Community Gardens

The Promise of Peace, (P.O.P.), Gardens was established in 2009 as an effort to bring diverse groups of people together on common ground while connecting to nature and learning to grow REAL food and then to celebrate the food as we shared the harvest. The mission of P.O.P. is to create equal access to nutritious food for all children and their families. We transform vacant places into thriving growing spaces where our programming changes lives one seed at a time.

Detroit Achievement Academy

We are an elementary school on the northwest side of Detroit that currently serves 105 students between the ages of 5-10. Since opening our doors, we have been the highest performing primary school in the city, with our students’ academic growth in the 99th percentile nationally. As a school we exist to holistically support the education and development of students who have the determination, drive, and skills to shape their own path of high achievement with the ultimate goal of creating civically engaged, joyful citizens who are ready to change the world.
