Velasco Elementary

There are 3 primary goals of our community garden. The first goal is to provide the real life experience of preparing a garden site and growing plants from seeds or seedlings that will develop into edible produce (vegetables, herbs and fruits) for our students and their families. The second goal is to address a primary need of our families. Seven years ago a hurricane damaged our community and resulted in one grocery store closing its doors permanently. The remaining grocery store is located 3-4 miles from our students' homes.

Harp Elementary School

The mission of our garden project is to encourage students and community members to work together using new techniques to achieve a healthy thriving community garden. A successful garden is the first step to healthy independent students; it provides students access to fresh food. Our cooking classes are the second step, providing students the knowledge to prepare it. For many of our students the lunch they receive at school is only meal they will receive for the day. Over 70% are on free or reduced lunches.

With this grant we would like to: 1) add a composting center, and 2) replace our outdated drip irrigation system.

The WITS Tower Garden will be the primary feature of the WITS Green for Kids program, with the goal of increasing environmental awareness and develop sustainable practices in public schools. Because the Tower Gardens are mobile, students can connect to nature anywhere in their school, year-round. The Tower Gardens will be featured in the WITS Green Labs, hands-on educational classes on sustainability topics; used to support the WITS Culinary Labs; and also made available to teachers for use in their curricula.

Maybeury Elementary

Maybeury Elementary's Growing Minds garden aims to illuminate students' understanding about food--where it comes from, how it is grown, and how essential it is for a healthy body. The garden is Maybeury's Wellness Committee’s core effort to improve the school's food culture. Through hands-on experiences, we seek to excite students, engage teachers, and educate parents on the benefits and joys of healthy eating.

E. A. Gibson Elementary School

The goals of the greenhouse/garden are:
- To teach students how to grow their own food
- To allow students hands-on experience with plants and the needs of plants
- To develop civic minded students by having them grow food that will be shared with community food banks
- To build up an awareness of nature and its importance in our daily lives
- To help enhance students' awareness of world needs and how we must help one another in order to survive

Harrison Primary Center

We would like to create an edible garden in our school's courtyard. The garden would be a collaboration between the school, our afterschool program (Boys & Girls Club), and volunteers from the community. The purpose of the garden has multiple layers, but the foundation is to provide another service to our local and greater community. Students will use this as a learning experience, using classroom based lessons in tandem with Boys & Girls Club curriculum based Positive Sprouts program.
