St. Anthony School

The goal is to sustain the established gardens and continue to integrate the experiences into the curriculum. Since 2009, gardens have been a project based learning opportunity for the school. There is a large garden in middle school, boxed gardens, worm composting, and an aquaponic garden. There is a student garden club that participates in the Grow Hawaii Garden Initiative where students are challenged to use their school gardens as a catalyst for

EcoSPACES @ Philip's Academy Charter School

OUR MISSION

EcoSPACES is a multidimensional co-curricular program designed to give students the tools to lead healthy and environmentally productive lives in the 21st century.  Utilizing unique learning environments, we seek to inspire students to embrace the highest principles of environmental and nutritional stewardship.  It is our hope that students will make informed decisions for living a life that benefits their bodies and our planet, while understanding the interconnectedness of all living things.

Summers-Knoll School

Through the gardening project, we aim to support children's learning about, and investment in, sustainable growing practices, health and nutrition, and social and environmental justice. We also strive to increase consumption of local, sustainably grown, healthy foods. A school garden will allow vast opportunities to learn experientially, collaboratively, and would support our project-based, theme-based curriculum.

Thomas Edison Charter Academy

We will use our garden to teach science, math, social studies & nutrition to grades k-8; feed our student and parent population; and make meaningful contributions to our community through food donations.

We currently lack funds to purchase soil, seeds and other supplies for our current garden. So the garden does not have a great impact on our school curriculum or student population. If we receive this grant, it would enable us to plant and harvest seasonally, enabling students throughout the grade-levels an opportunity to grow, learn from and consume their own food.

Columbian Elementary

We will maintain a large schoolyard garden at Columbian Elementary School in the heart of north Denver and educate students and families about gardening and healthy eating. The garden is maintained by paid high school students from neighboring North High School, who help run an after school and summer program to inspire and teach elementary school students about fresh food, science, and healthy living. Columbian students run a farm stand to provide fresh, affordable food to the community and learn business skills.

Ann Visger K-5 Preparatory Academy

Through the generous support of the Whole Kids Foundation, Wayne Metro will construct a new garden at Ann Visger Academy with the goal of creating a new outdoor learning environment that integrates hands-on gardening activities with school curriculum and community life.

The garden will help Wayne Metro empower students and community residents to:

1) Increase student engagement with fresh fruits and vegetables through hands-on gardening activities;

2) Increase student academic achievement through gardening activities that reinforce school curriculum;

King Elementary School

The goal of the Urban Garden is educating school age youth and the production of community gardens/farmer markets in a neighborhood that is considered a food desert. This project will assist in the expansion of our existing Urban Agriculture training program to include completing a 7,500 square foot outdoor education garden to teach environmental education skills to youth from 4-6 public schools through the lens of urban gardening.

PS 90 Edna Cohen

Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy

We seek to increase students' knowledge of nature and nutrition while enhancing academic learning, ecoliteracy, and psychosocial development. Loma Vista Farm is a five acre, real, working farm. There are 3 horses, 3 sheep, 1 alpaca, 3 pigs, 2 cows, 8 rabbits, 8 goats, and over 100 chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guineas. There is over an acre in vegetable, herb, native, and orchard plants and a pond. The greenhouse is 30'x120' and we have an indoor classroom with a kitchen and two bathrooms.
