About the Program:

We will maintain a large schoolyard garden at Columbian Elementary School in the heart of north Denver and educate students and families about gardening and healthy eating. The garden is maintained by paid high school students from neighboring North High School, who help run an after school and summer program to inspire and teach elementary school students about fresh food, science, and healthy living. Columbian students run a farm stand to provide fresh, affordable food to the community and learn business skills. The garden offers a much needed resource to a disadvantaged community through the creation of a sustainable food source. Students acquire the skills associated with growing their own food, as well as learning about the nutritional advantages that local, fresh produce offers. Food grown in the garden is sold at an on-site farm stand and to the school cafeteria. This grant will allow us to purchase supplies and to pay our high school interns for the coming year.

This program is supported by URBICULTURE COMMUNITY FARMS.
