Upper Elementary

Leo J Muir Elementary School

By combining planning, planting, maintaining and harvesting a garden within our curriculum, three primary goals will be accomplished: 1) increase our urban students' understanding, awareness and gratitude for how produce is grown, 2) supplement existing math, science and health curricula with hands-on experiences in and beyond the classroom, 3) build pride and confidence in individual student accomplishments, no matter at what grade or ability level.

Davenport School of the Arts

The goal of our garden project is to teach our students about sustainability and the environment. The garden is utilized by our K-8 students and our EMH unit. Students have been able to raise their own vegetables for their Thanksgiving Feast, compare growth rates are various lettuce varietys, raise and release ladybugs as they learn about beneficial insects, and see firsthand the butterfly life cycle. They are also able to explore alternative farming methods through our hydroponics unit.

Anatola Elementary

This garden is part of a larger multi-component project aimed to address obesity by providing physical activity and nutrition education at three elementary schools, reaching over 2,500 children. Specifically, the garden provides hands-on and in-class educational opportunities to first and second graders and their parents, which encourages them to more deeply understand the link between healthy eating and growing their own produce.

Charter School for Applied Technologies

The primary goal of CSAT's Greenhouse Education Garden is to engage students in real-world, greenhouse-based agricultural management, in alignment with best educational practices and New York State Learning Standards.

Alexander Elementary School

Drive by Alexander Elementary School these days and you'll notice something is going on behind the dyke. Tractors have started raising a large area with fill in preparation of the edible playspace that will begin sprouting this Fall.

Coronado Elementary

Our garden goal is to strengthen and enrich the gardening experience of our students by extending our current garden onto our main campus. We would like to create a composting area as well as provide for a more efficient and safe working environment.

We hope to:

Conestoga Elementary, Murray, Nebraska

After two years of research and fundraising, our elementary school installed an outdoor classroom, Cougar Hollow, in the summer of 2012. In the professional landscape plans, drawn up by an architect certified in the installation of outdoor classrooms, we designated an area for classroom gardens. The goal of these gardens is to promote learning in a variety of subjects as well as to allow personal growth. We believe that children will develop skills and understandings of many areas as they engage in personally meaningful explorations of the world around them.

Mickle Middle School

The Young Urban Farmers Program was started at a Lincoln, Nebraska middle school in 2012 to connect children to the soil and the origins of their food. Students gain knowledge and experience in sustainable crop production, hoop house management, cooking their produce and basic business planning. The students are engaged in all aspects of the garden-from starting seed to selling at their own farmer's market.

College Park Elementary

College Park Elementary School's garden will be a teaching garden where students plant, grow, harvest, and enjoy eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs in connection with grade-level curriculum content.

Crown Valley Elementary

Our goal is for our students to graduate from our campus with the skills & understanding of what healthy foods are, how to find the joy of growing them, & the awareness of the environmental impact they have. The Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant will enable Crown Valley Elementary School to provide much needed repairs to our existing garden & green house, lesson plans for the teachers to use in the garden, & materials and seeds to plant & continue growing a thriving garden from year to year. Our garden is the central focus of our school grounds.
