Upper Elementary

N.S.U. Elementary Lab School

We want to maximize the great potential our garden has for learning and fostering full, healthy lives for our children. A chance to teach scientific, environmental studies, plant life cycles, appreciation of food production, and seasonal cycles are objectives made possible through gardening. Additional goals that naturally take place include enrichment of science, math, art, environmental studies, health, and language arts through various garden related units and activities. This garden will continue to provide ongoing exploration to enrich our students

Northwest Elementary School

Northwest Elementary School's "Learn to Grow ~ Grow to Learn" Project involves teaching students' about ecology, biology, responsibility and sustainability.

Our Principal has proposed a three year garden project that incorporates our students, teachers, cafeteria staff, custodial staff, parent association (PTA), dad's club, school district and community organizations and businesses.

High Pointe Elementary

The main garden goal is that students will gain the experience, education, and health benefits relating to planting, tending, and harvesting plants in raised beds and in ground plots at High Pointe Elementary. The grant will help provide topsoil, mulch, soil amendments, and other supplies needed to prepare four already-constructed raised garden beds, 8' x 3' each, for use in spring planting, 2013. In addition, the grant funding will purchase other supplies to use with the four already-existing in ground plant circles located in close proximity to the raised beds.

Southampton Elementary School

Goals: to provide gardens:

1. Where children learn the Virginia Standrds of Learning (SOLs) objectives in a variety of areas.

2. Which develop within children a passion for nature and gardening.

3. Which build ties within the school family (staff, students, and extended families).

4. Which build bonds with neighbors and community groups.

This grant will help us sustain garden operations and activities for one year. It will also enable us to purchase a much needed teaching table suitable for outdoors.

North Avondale Montessori

The goal of our school garden is twofold. First, we hope to provide hands-on experiences allowing our students to learn "across the curriculum". Our students will have lessons in the garden that incorporate science, math, reading and history all into one hands-on, experiential learning opportunity. This project exemplifies our school's Montessori values in that it brings together parents, teachers and students in an educational setting to participate in real-life learning.

John B. Monlux Elementary

The Monlux community, consisting of parents and teachers together, believes that a garden is an outdoor classroom where we can share valuable life lessons with our future. It is a tool that will help us build a stronger community. We live in a densely urban area where it is easy to lose our inherent connection to the earth. We will be growing and preparing our own food utilizing sustainable methods, with the hopes of sharing some of it with our cafeteria and those in need.

Maya Lin Elementary School

Maya Lin is an arts integrated, inquiry-based public magnet school that allows students the freedom to explore beyond the standards-based curriculum. In a safe, nurturing environment we foster smart, critical thinking kids who love art and know they can do anything. Our Mission is to embrace 21st century learning and the involvement of our community in building a dynamic school environment. We are a title one school serving students from a diverse range of backgrounds. 

Mittineague School

Working in our garden helps to build an awareness and appreciation for our community and environment as well as helps to develop a sense of self and accomplishment.

Bayview Elementary School

The goal of the Bayview Community Garden is to first and foremost, to enhance student learning through a hands-on experience. The garden provides the opportunity to move the focus from simply consuming produce, to planning, creating and cultivating it in a collaborative method. It allows students to interact fully in and with their physical environment outside the classroom integrating curriculum. Students will be able to explore and incorporated more vegetables in their diet through tasting and trying.

Mexico Middle School

Our main goal is to provide fresh vegetables for our school, both to supplement our lunch program as well as classroom tastings. The second goal is to provide education about healthy eating, sustainable farming, and the value of home-grown food. A third goal is that students will benefit in personal/social ways: to reap the rewards of seeing a product from their own work, to learn to work together, and to give back to the community. Since we have not had a garden before now, we are in need of tools and materials to start our program from scratch.
