About the Program:

Our goals for this garden are the following: 1)Students will demonstrate that they have learned how to plant, grow, harvest, and prepare fruits and vegetables from their school garden. 2)Students will increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Currently there exists a traditional garden. This plot with the hoop house provides a wonderful learning and growing environment for school based nutrition education which is funded by the Michigan Nutrition Network. One complaint that we hear from the neighbors is that we do not grow enough greens, or culture sensitive food. We plan to work closely with the neighbors and survey the parent at student teacher conferences to see what they want to grow in an expanded garden. This grant will allow us to expand our garden and reach more more families that live in poverty in that neighborhood. This grant will enable us to create new garden beds, walkways, and a learning environment for our Afrocentric community.

This program is supported by NorthWest Initiative.
