Pre-Kindergarten

st. francis school

I am the garden coordinator at a small independant school, St. Francis, in Goshen, KY.  It sits on 64 acres.  When I started, the school had 2 failed attemps with school gardens and an empty green house.  I have been there a year, part time, and have 6 raised beds with year round growing capabilities, a 350 sq. ft. in ground garden, 5 indoor vermacompost  and one in ground vermacompost.  We incubated eggs and have those chickens and 2 angora rabbits!  The kids have built me a chicken tractor and helped build the in ground vermacompost.  I teach part of their healthy choices class.

Playa del Rey Elementary School Garden

The school garden is an extension of the classroom. Students are able to apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-world experiences in the garden. The garden is used for math, science, art, reading and language arts, and of course gardening. Gardening is integrated into cirriuclum and an enrichment component. The permaculture based management of the garden allows students to investigate the multiple systems co-existing within it. This encourages students to comprehend the larger intersectional relationships between subjects, skills and community in an exciting way.

Growing Green Kids

LILA School Garden

Our school garden is part of a community garden located on school property. It is an in-ground vegetable garden with an automatic watering system. It measures 38X14 square feet and is divided by 4 beds. The garden has been available for use for a long time, but it has never been sustained. At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, we started managing it differently. One administrator (Nadjiba Medjaoui) was assigned to manage the garden, and she promptly applied for the Whole Kids Foundation Grant. Parents donated time, material and labor to launch the garden!

Sprouts Children's Garden Program

The Sprouts Children's Gardening program is an intiative of the London Community Resource Centre. The progam teaches children and families about growing and preapring healthy, organic food. We promote urban bio-diversity, nature literacy, food literacy, and practical gardening and cooking skills. Our programs are hands-on, engaging, and fun and include garden exploration and maintenance, nature-related crafts, stories, and activities, and food harvesting and preparation.

Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS

Mundo Verde is a sustainable and bilingual public charter school serving PreK3-5th grade. All students receive a Cooking and Gardening class once a week for an hour. Students learn how to support their own wellness, are encouraged to try new fruits and vegetables, and enjoy developing a closer relationship to their food by growing it in the garden!

Alpine Edible Schoolyards

Alpine Edible Schoolyards (AES) is the hub of urban farm and school garden installation, maintenance, and education in the Bow Valley. A liaison, resource centre, connector and facilitator, AES works with school boards, administrators, teachers, students, small businesses, municipalities, environmental groups and community members to ensure full, safe, utilization and continued success of fertile learning grounds.

Yara Community Gardens

Yara Community Gardens provides space for members of the community, organizations and schools to rent plots for a minimal fee to grow their own produce to support their families and programs.  We have over 140 plots across 3 garden areas that are available to rent.  Each year at least one larger plot is designated as a Community Plot where vegetables are grown to support our vulnerable population.  The produce from here is donated to local service organizations and funds raised from our Charity Markets support these organizations as well.

Medrano Community Garden

The students at Medrano Elementary benefit most from the hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to healthy food and fitness choices offered by the school garden. Through sensory observations and inquiry-driven methods, math, science, and other subjects come alive in the outdoors. As a result, students develop content knowledge and learning strategies for the long-term, helping them achieve far more than just passing scores on standardized tests.
