Bridge to Community Health (Puente a la Salud Comunitaria)

INTEGRATED APPROACH
Developing a Model for a Sustainable Food System

Rural family farmers work hard to produce half of the world's food, yet they make up 75% of the world's poor (FAO, 2014). We focus on the farming, consumption, and commercialization of amaranth, a highly nutritious cereal crop native to Mexico, to improve family nutrition and create economic opportunities for rural families.   Our work is based in Oaxaca, Mexico.

José Carreiro Children’s Garden

The goals of the José Carreiro Children’s Garden are to provide place-based hands-on experiences for children which actively engage them in sustainable gardening as of means of learning how plants and animals grow; teach children where food comes from; provide opportunities for children to explore how to support a healthy garden environment; teach children how to make sound choices for healthy bodies; and utilize the garden framework to make connections to the local ecosystem.

The Cultural Conservancy Native Foodways Program

The heart of The Cultural Conservancy’s Native Foodways work lies in connecting Native communities, Native youth, and non-Native allies together in a trailblazing effort to give Native communities equal access, knowledge, and understanding of their foods, traditions, and cultures. In doing so, we focus on health and nutrition through food as an integral step toward improved well-being.

FoodCycle

The Foodcycle Project (Alimentociclo in portuguese) is a street food cart adapted to store and manage educative kits and tools. The education activities approach differents subjects around food adopting a sistemic way of understanding.

We act offerring courses, workshops and activities for schoolar groups (from kindergarten to high school), for community and productive groups in rural and traditional localities, and also for groups of lunch maids, parents and teachers. Yet, we offer activities in open space public events such as gastronomic feasts and farmers markets.

St John's Lutheran Church Food Pantry

The food pantry at St John's works with area schools to ensure kid friendly, healthy food is available to the members of our community.

Through working with the administrators and guidance counselors at area schools we are able to identify families who need help putting a meal on their table. Our food pantry collects non-perishables and strives to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and animal-based proteins through the generous donations of our parishioners.

Green Scene Chicago

With Green Scene Chicago programming I teach students how to plant and tend vegetable beds that, upon fruition, host two kinds of production: crops and theater. I recruit youth and elders to grow food and unearth their artistic impulses through writing, story telling, theater, music and dance. While exploring healthy earth practices, healthy eating, and healthy self-expression in the garden, these teams create performances to share with their community.

Genesis Community Garden

The program began as a school garden for my special education students located in alternative program.  I joined up with a community agency to write grants to build a greenhouse in order to raise seedlings for the community gardens in our county.  We had a set back last year and are currently planning to provide seedlings for 18 community gardens and re-establish our school garden too.

Plants for Human Health Institute

At North Carolina State University's Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) we are leading the discovery and delivery of innovative plant-based solutions to advance human health. PHHI includes faculty researchers and Extension personnel. School gardening is one focus area of the Extension program, STEM Education. Through our school garden resources and engagement, PHHI is equipping teachers to integrate curriculum standards in the edible classroom and improving community nutrition through fresh produce.
