Lower Elementary

Create a Change Now

We accomplish our mission by adopting an at-risk elementary school then starting from the

ground up by installing an Edible Desert Garden and using it as hub around which we plant

seeds of change throughout each school and within each child with our Healthy School,

Healthy Life program including:

•Edible Desert Gardens – Planting edible gardens provides hands-on learning

and nutrition education from the ground up for the students.

•Garden Club – Establishing a Garden Club in the school creates support from

Odyssey Orchards

Odyssey Orchards is 1 acre edible learning garden and fruit orchard, where students learn how to care for the earth, grow healthy food, develop hands-on skills, and integrate their learning in a whole-systems context. Odyssey Orchards also functions as an urban-agriculture demonstration site, where members of the larger community can participate in weekend workshops that teach skills and methods in Permaculture design and sustainable living.

Where does food come from?

We are basically trying to use 'lost' space around the school on floors and walls to grow food and show students that food does not come initially from supermarkets. It supports one of the IB PYP units of inquiry which is the title of the programme. It also supports a child nutrition centre that our school owner, Pilar Deza, founded in an extremely poor area of Lima quite close to the school, http://www.coninperu.org/.

Minnesota Food Association

The mission of Minnesota Food Association (MFA) is to build a sustainable food system based on social, economic and environmental justice through education, training and partnerships.

We envision a community where:
• All people who desire to farm have the tools, knowledge, skills and access to resources necessary to be successful farmers.
• Organic and sustainable agricultural principles and practices are embraced and supported by both producers and consumers.
• All people eat organic, sustainably and locally produced food.

Edible Village

Edible Village is the educational institution for children of age 4-7, offering programs in which children can learn and grow with our garden-based curriculum.

Edible International Academy

Edible International Academy(EIA) is the international program which is offered during the weekend in the beautiful campus of Incheon English Village in order to provide 100% English immersion curriculum to Korean students. Through its systematic components during the weekend and vacation period, it provides an opportunity to take rigorous international curriculum without giving up Korean elementary curriculum provided by Korean schools during the weekdays.

Edible EdVentures

Edible EdVentures is a project-based science enrichment program for children to explore the links between food and nature!  Edible EdVentures explores exciting elements of food through inquiry-based science, literacy and art projects.  Our mission is to provide students with hands-on workshops that promote a healthy balance between our plates and our environment.

Green Thumb Growers Guild

Green Thumb Growers Guild is a horticultural education program that meets as part of the afterschool enrichment programs at Sidney Elementary School.  Students who participate experience anything and everything having to do with growing and using plants (and fungi).  The Green Thumb Growers Guild began in October 2013 with 15 members.  We use the outdoor gardens behind the elementary, classroom space for crafting projects, the nature trail for collecting and observing, and the greenhouse at the High School for starting seeds and experimenting.  Like the plants and gardens, we are growing as

Kid Chefs

We prepare our dishes from scratch using local ingredients and take the "mystery" out of food. The children take the forefront in all preparations and learn to love eating healthy, delicious snacks together.

Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom

The mission of Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) is to promote understanding and awareness of the importance of agriculture. Our educational programs provide a wealth of opportunities for embedding agriculture, food and natural resources education into the K-12 classroom. MAITC seeks to improve student achievement by applying authentic agricultural examples to teach core curriculum concepts in science, social studies, language arts, math and nutrition. These programs cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the food and fiber system that we all rely on every day.
