Marion-Polk Food Share Youth Gardens

Marion-Polk Food Share is leading the fight to end hunger in Marion and Polk counties in Oregon. While we provide emergency food boxes, we recognize we have the responsibility to address root causes of hunger and "stop the line before it starts" by providing youth nutrition awareness and food systems education in our communities.

Oakland Parks and Recreation Community Gardens Program

Oakland Parks and Recreation is gardening with a purpose, with 16 locations that bring people of all ages and diverse backgrounds together to grow organic vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Additionally, OPR now offers six garden locations run in partnership with schools and nonprofits. These beautiful gardens engage children and community members to help grow food for themselves and their families, at no cost to participate. OPR features 23 sites with youth gardening facilities, including at most of our recreation centers.

Our Nonprofit Organization Partners

Sweetgrass Garden

Mission
The mission of the Sweetgrass Garden Co-op, as a 501 (c) 3 Not-for-Profit Corporation, is to provide free, fresh, naturally grown, local produce to charitable food distribution agencies in South Carolina and to support that effort by growing a portion of the produce for income to sustain the enterprise. We cultivate a variety of fruits and vegetables, using sustainable methods and good agricultural practices, as we educate the public about farming, composting, and distributing food to people in need and the organizations that serve them.

West Education Center

Our program manages seventy-five 8'x4' raised cedar beds, 6 cold frames, 3 tower gardens, and 2 aquaponics systems. We have financed our program with grants from Lowe's, Target, and Whole Foods. The students are sustainably growing Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Cucumbers, Canteloupe, Watermelon, Summer Squash, Potatoes, Herbs, Carrots, Spring Mix, Spinach, Broccoli, Kohlrabi, Cabbage, Onions, Radishes, Asparagus, Cauliflower, Kale, Collards, Chard, and Celery.

Aviva Family And Children Services

Working with youth in a Group Home setting to create a theraputic garden and kitchen garden.  We share one morning a week in a small group working in the garden, talking about healthy lifestyle habits and enjoying the outdoor space.  At the school the science teacher uses the garden as a tool for life sciences learning.  It is one of the spaces where the youth feel completely comfortable and safe.

South Education Center Schoolyard Garden (Richfield, Minnesota)

SEC organic garden was initiated by Terry Guthrie with the support of The City of Bloomington's SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) in 2009.  The garden supports curriculum engagment, cafeteria integration, community outreach and building-wide participation.  SEC Organic Garden is the flagship garden and serves as a model for future endeavors in Intermediate District 287.

Island Grown Schools

Island Grown Schools is Martha's Vineyard Farm to School Program.  We work with almost every schoolage child on the island, from 2-18 years old, at all seven K-12 schools and at six island pre-schools.  We have installed and support gardens at all 13 of our partner schools, work with cafeteria staff to bring locally sourced meat and produce to school meals at every school, collaborate with classroom teachers to lead farm, gaden, and nutrition-based curriculum-tied lessons, and lead field trips to island family farms.

ISD 287

ISD 287 is an intermediate school district serving 12 school districts in Hennepin County, Minnesota. I work in the alternative schools. At South Education Center we applied for and were awarded a Bloomington Public Health SHIP grant to build 12 raised garden beds. I entered First Lady Michelle Obama's Recipes for Healthy Kids contest, which I found out about from Bloomington Public Health, and we won the Grand Prize in the nation for our Turkey Porcupine Slider Recipe. We serve a very diverse population of students.
