St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School

Our Garden of Eat-Um has evolved from a vision to reality, providing food for our school cafeteria, local food pantry, and a school fundraiser, in addition to countless learning opportunities. The Garden has bloomed via donations, volunteerism, community support, and sweat equity. We began with 15 raised beds, and have more than doubled those. We also have a 35-by-35-foot St. Peter's Plot for potatoes, carrots, onions, and rutabagas for a school fundraiser and use in our school cafeteria, a large community herb garden, and a new community bed for asparagus and rhubarb.

Washington Elementary

We would like to continue operating our current school garden. This garden is rented from the community garden plots and used to produce vegetables for our students to sample. This grant will enable us to continue renting the garden, as well as, purchase seeds in the future. New gardening tools will also need to be purchased, due to a new school garden coordinator being in place.

Edward Devotion School

Our garden is primarily used as a way to enrich a variety of curricula, as well as a vehicle for opening up students' awareness of local food/plant growth and cycles. We built the beds three years ago with PTO funding and Brookline Parks Department support, and this year we have a local Brookline Education Foundation grant for teacher collaboration in using the garden and creating curriculum tools.

Swansboro Elementary School

Swansboro seeks creative and holistic ways to enrich the learning of our students while creating opportunities to improve the health of its students and the community. This garden provides a unique opportunity to accomplish a variety of goals in a focused coordinated way. Created as certified wildlife habitat, the garden helps urban youngsters unplug from media influences and connect with nature. It provides real-life examples of concepts from the natural sciences for teachers and fosters cooperative social action among students.

Rothenberg Academy

Goal: to offer hands-on experiential learning for students at Rothenberg Academy, with the opportunity to deepen their classroom lessons via the garden. You will help support a hub of green, agriculture and growth, as well as education and community interaction in this inner city neighborhood.

Littleton Academy

Our goal is to complement the students' class room education with hands-on experience in earth and biological sciences. Expanding our existing garden by adding a hobby greenhouse would enhance the learning experience of students at all grade levels. Raising edible plants will encourage the student community to make healthy choices, learn how food reaches the dinner plate, and encourage fundraising, and philanthropy.

Roosevelt elementary

Our goal is to create an outdoor classroomthat will function as an extension of our indoor classrooms. We believe that the Growing Classroom will provide a natural and engaging setting for students to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom. We also believe that this garden will be a source of pride for the school and allow our students and families to contribute to the success of the garden. Lastly, we are trying to promote healthy living in our low income households were variety and good nutrition are often missing.

Point Defiance Elementary School

The goal of our garden is to make it possible for our students, staff and community to actively learn from growing sustainable organic foods in order to give back to others in our own community by making donations to local food banks.

Lincoln

Our goal for the year from our core team is to create a district wide sustainability program. For years we have been doing individual projects, gardens, energy audits, etc... This year we have been provided funding to have a core team, and teams at each of our 17 buildings, to grow our vision of sustainability. The garden we create at Lincoln this year will be part of our eventual vision to have gardens at each school. Our main high school has an established garden and greenhouses. We plan to work together to eventually have students work farmer's markets selling their food.
