Here at the Edible Schoolyard Project, people often reach out to us asking where to begin with getting an edible education program off the ground. In this virtual workshop, we are thrilled to welcome guest hosts Shelley Joyer and Christy Calderon of Between Two Shrubs to share their insights and experiences from starting their school’s garden program. From finding collaborators, to integrating academics, to thoughtful plant planning, Christy and Shelley will share principles and lessons learned that can be widely applied in starting an edible education program.
Workshop Resources:
With the many tasks and processes needed to keep a school garden in good shape, bringing on volunteers can make a huge difference in making sure the garden gets the attention it needs to thrive. In this virtual workshop, we’ll share lessons learned from growing our volunteer program which today welcomes nearly 600 volunteers each year, providing an average of 40 hours of additional garden work each week. We’ll share principles of managing volunteer programs that can be applied in a wide variety of contexts and offer resources for growing your volunteer program.

The practice of reflecting on food memories connects us to ourselves, the natural world, and our families and communities. In this workshop, Esther Cook will share approaches for leading lessons centered around food memories. When done with care and intention, an exploration of food memories builds both deep appreciation for the power of food in our lives as well as community within groups of people of all ages.
