LiveWell Kids Garden Education Program

LIveWell Kids was launched by Beach Cities Health District in response to a high childhood obesity rate in the district that it serves. Beach Cities Health District is a public agency that creates healthy services and programming for the residents of its district. The District's Garden Education Coordinator (me) trains volunteer garden docents to annually teach students 5 lessons that align with the Common Core State Standards in 9 schools.

The mission of the LiveWell Kids program is (from our handbook):

Open at this time

Hi there!  I am not currently part of a program but rather a volunteer who wants to learn how to implement the Edible Schoolyard Project within my local area.  I'd like to introduce it to SFSU's(San Francisco State University) TVI (Teacher of Visual Impairment) program as well as in Southern California where my nephew will be teaching (in rather quite a large food desert).  I think the children with visual disabilities would love to be a part of this program! I'm so excited!

The Madonna Well-Med Children/Senior Garden

Our goal for our community is to shift the way our children and families see food and are able to access fresh fruits and vegetables. We include healthy activities and exercise. We strongly believe what we put in our bodies affects not only our physical health but our mental health. We envision a Westside with lower rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes through educating the youth about growing food and preparing their harvests for their families. We have been able to successfully supplement 50% of the lunches and snacks via the garden for our community residents.

Youth Farm

At Youth Farm, we farm to grow. We grow food. We grow community. We grow leaders. We work in diverse neighborhoods across Minneapolis and St. Paul to utilize food as a catalyst for social change, for community engagement, for leadership development - Food is our tool to change the world. We farm to educate and train through gardens and greenhouses. We cultivate leadership through year round programming focused on planting, growing, preparing and distributing the food we grow.
