Garden Classrooms

Hollingers Island Elementary School

According to the Center for Disease Control, gardening with kids is one of the best ways to encourage kids to make healthier food choices. The concrete experience of digging in the dirt and watching a vegetable grow, will remove any fear a child has regarding that vegetable, and when the child sees that vegetable in the grocery store he or she will ask mom or dad to buy it. In addition to making better food choices, gardening will also teach students confidence, motor skills, and math and science skills.

Wellness, good nutrition, recycling, physical work and community service are taught and modeled by staff.

This grant will allow us to expand our current garden and sustain it in a more eco-friendly manner with a better irrigation system. Through garden improvements, more teachers, students and families will be able to utilize all the garden has to offer.

Briarcliff Elementary

This garden is a grand adventure for us. We are looking forward to using this garden to teach our children responsibility, community, and healthy choices. While we are not planning at this time to take the garden to salad bar route, this opportunity will allow children to experience creating a garden and growing food that will help them learn to make better choices for a healthy lifestyle. Because of our intention to use the food as part of a food bank, the children will experience the joy of helping others. We have a very close knit community next door to the school.
