Academic Classrooms

Red Lodge Public Schools

The goal of the garden is to provide youth in the Red Lodge area with an opportunity to learn about where their food comes from. As more local food moves into the schools the connection will be further strengthened when students are able to contribute and participate in the full growing cycle. Students will participate through classroom lessons in the garden after school programs and summer activities. The project will also support the community through connections with the local food bank.

Marlinton Elementary Graduating Gardens

By establishing a school garden program it will not only benefit the students but the whole community. We hope students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of where food comes from how it's grown and a personal desire to be healthy through eating well and exercising. We hope this excitement and enthusiasm transfers to parents and together they will make positive changes by preparing meals with more wholesome ingredients cooking at home or starting a home garden.

J. J. Hill Montessori Magnet PTO

The garden offers both students and teachers the opportunity to explore and interact with the natural environment in multiple disciplines including math social studies art and theater. Through expansion of the schoolyard vegetable beds and the addition of the potato towers more children will experience multiple lessons in the gardens (the existing six beds proved inadequate for the school community in 2011) and we will have more produce to contribute to our partnering food-shelf.

Goodrell Middle School

The grant will make it possible for our FoodCorps members to work with 5 schools in Des Moines to build and revitalize school gardens. In addition through the special projects funding we request we will provide a 5-week school garden training in early 2012 to teams of at least 2 people (teachers social workers parents etc.) at a dozen schools. This training will introduce these school teams to basic gardening techniques curriculum that aligns with Iowa Core and garden planning activities.

Corvallis Environmental Center: Edible Corvallis Initiative

Our Farm to School programs makes connections between our food system and our school system. We work directly with school districts to procure and promote locally grown foods. Our program is working to increase the use of local foods, encourage our children to make healthy eating choices, and support regional farmers.

Bright Futures Academy Charter School

Our garden is presently growing an extensive array of vegetables and fruit and has been sustainable since 2010.  We are teaching our students how to grow healthy food and how to cook healthy food so that they can lead a healthy lifestyle with an  emphasis on disease prevention, resulting from our fast food culture.  Lessons on awareness to the importance of biodiversity in our food supply and the sustainability of our soil and water supplies is another way we hope to educate our kids.

Avalon School

Our goals are to create a space for students to engage in hands on learning to create a program led by and sustained by students and to create a program that engages our students in the larger community. The grant will help our school become more environmentally responsible and create an innovative learning space that will help students who have trouble learning in a traditional school environment thrive. It will also help our student leaders learn leadership skills.

The Schoolyard Garden at the Academy for Global Citizenship

Environmental sustainability roots AGC’s education in the natural world. We believe that learning in harmony with nature provides opportunities to understand the relevance of our education. Learning from natural processes is a powerful vehicle for teaching our students about the connection between their everyday choices and the health of the community, the environment, and themselves.
