Plants for Human Health Institute

At North Carolina State University's Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) we are leading the discovery and delivery of innovative plant-based solutions to advance human health. PHHI includes faculty researchers and Extension personnel. School gardening is one focus area of the Extension program, STEM Education. Through our school garden resources and engagement, PHHI is equipping teachers to integrate curriculum standards in the edible classroom and improving community nutrition through fresh produce.

Hills School Garden

The Hills School Garden is currently 1800 square feet, and is laid out in a compound keyholedesign to maximize growing space.  Various aspects of permaculture practice, such as no-till gardening, companion planting, and composting are being employed to increase soil health and plant fertility.

Adelante Spanish Immersion School

The Garden Program at Adelante Spanish Immersion School is a beloved part of the school culture.  Each grade has 9 weeks of Garden Class, with topics appropriate for the age level and grade's science standards.  In addition there is a free after-school Garden Club where students learn gardening techniques, play games, and, most importantly pick and eat salads.

Minnesota Food Association

The mission of Minnesota Food Association (MFA) is to build a sustainable food system based on social, economic and environmental justice through education, training and partnerships.

We envision a community where:

• Organic and sustainable agricultural principles and practices are embraced and supported by both producers and consumers.
• All people eat organic, sustainably and locally produced food.

Green Thumb Growers Guild

Green Thumb Growers Guild is a horticultural education program that meets as part of the afterschool enrichment programs at Sidney Elementary School.  Students who participate experience anything and everything having to do with growing and using plants (and fungi).  The Green Thumb Growers Guild began in October 2013 with 15 members.  We use the outdoor gardens behind the elementary, classroom space for crafting projects, the nature trail for collecting and observing, and the greenhouse at the High School for starting seeds and experimenting.  Like the plants and gardens, we are growing as

Kid Chefs

We prepare our dishes from scratch using local ingredients and take the "mystery" out of food. The children take the forefront in all preparations and learn to love eating healthy, delicious snacks together.

Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom

The mission of Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) is to promote understanding and awareness of the importance of agriculture. Our educational programs provide a wealth of opportunities for embedding agriculture, food and natural resources education into the K-12 classroom. MAITC seeks to improve student achievement by applying authentic agricultural examples to teach core curriculum concepts in science, social studies, language arts, math and nutrition. These programs cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the food and fiber system that we all rely on every day.
