York Community High School
The goal of our garden is to improve the visual appeal of the school’s courtyard and promote student interest in growing and consuming fresh, school-grown, organic foods. A school garden introduces students to vegetables that they normally would not consume. Food harvested from our garden will be given to the school’s food service for incorporating into the menu at the student cafeteria. Summer foods harvested will be donated to the food pantry of York Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst.
This grant would make possible hands-on experiences for science lessons and projects in the environmental sciences and biology, mathematics, vocational arts (woods, engineering), CAD (landscape design), marketing (food product, manufacture and retail) and foods (food production), as well as others.
We will also grow enrollment of students in the year-round, York Community High School Garden Club. Club members will be responsible for organizing and executing the maintenance of the YCHS garden.
