About the Program:

Sutton Elementary School is located in a primarily low socio-economic, immigrant neighborhood in Southwest Houston. Sutton Elementary is a 100% Title 1 campus and 86% of the students are designated as at-risk of educational failure. Sutton’s student population is 1,025 across Prekindergarten through fifth grade. The students’ demographic breakdown is 77% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 8% African American, and 4% White.

Sutton’s seventeen year-old garden needs a face lift. The school garden needs repairs because of the damage done in the garden area during the recent two-year renovation of the school. Sutton’s goal is to add a dependable watering system which will extend to both the vegetables and the forty fruit trees. A second goal is to rebuild the shape of the raised vegetable beds since the heavy machines plowed most of the bricks into the ground and chipped some bricks during the school renovation. The third goal is to increase student participation in outdoor garden activities.
