About the Program:

The goal of the West Central Valley FFA school garden is to provide students the hands-on skills needed to successfully plant and harvest fruits and vegetables. Students will build and maintain the raised garden beds in addition to planting and harvesting the produce.

The produce from the garden will be used in the school cafeteria. We will also use the produce to educate students about preservation and fresh food cooking in the agriculture and cooking classes. Extra produce will be sold at the farmers market, donated to the local food pantry, or sent home with the student volunteers.

The grant will provide the necessary funds to purchase the supplies needed to build raised garden beds, plant the first year of crops, and educate the high school students about the school gardens.

The plants we plan to grow during our first growing season include lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, squash, and peppers. We will also designate one bed to growing strawberries.
