Weinland Park Elementary School
Local Matters staff will work with staff and volunteers from Weinland Park Elementary (WPE) to expand their current learning garden. This garden will serve as an outdoor learning environment for WPE students and function as a demonstration garden for parents and other adults in the community who wish to begin growing their own food.
Through participation in the learning garden at WPE, students will have the opportunity to learn what fresh food is, how it grows, why it is important for health, and how to prepare it. The program inspires children to become involved in the growing foods from a young age, and in so doing helps motivate healthy behavioral changes for them and their parents.
Throughout the growing season, Local Matters will provide WPE students with the opportunity to take fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden home with them. These foods will provide nutrition assistance to students and their families at no cost, and promote the consumption of locally grown foods.
This program is supported by Local Matters.
