About the Program:

Currently we have 4 raised beds on school grounds, three of which have been in use in recent years. Our primary hurdles have been not having easy access to water and not having a nearby safe place to store gardening tools. With this grant, we intend to pay for a garden shed near the existing raised beds and run an underground water line from the school to the shed for easy, reliable access to water. Ultimately, though not with this grant award, we would ilke to purchase and use rain barrels to collect water for the garden to promote sustainability, as well as compost bins. We're not quite there yet, but hope to be in the near future!

This past summer, garden volunteers had to walk nearly 100 yards to a nearby stream to fill a watering can. There is, of course, water in the school building along with some safe storage space. However, volunteers do not have access to the school interior and asking the faciliteis manager to open the building during the summer months takes a lot of logistical time and coordination. We'd love to make things easier and more efficient.
