About the Program:

Our school garden began with the inception of our school horticulture program in the Fall of 2009. Through donations of seed and rich topsoil our school garden had humble beginnings. Students in our suburban town got to experience, many for the first time, the miracle and crowning achievement of growing their own food. Each student begins with vegetables seeds and grows them to maturity in one short semester. In the past, some of these vegetables have been used by our culinary arts program and others donated to our local "Meals on Wheels" program. In the Spring of 2012, we set the goal to begin growing nutritious organic food for our school cafeteria. Therefore, as soon as this school year began, our students built the raised beds and planted the seeds of our cool season vegetables. In addition to getting the program started, our goal was to become GAP certified as food safety is a priority as well. The program is off to great start. We have five 24 x 4 raised beds growing and our GAP certification is almost completed. The goal of our garden is to take our 2012-2013 pilot program and expand it to grow more nutritious food for our school cafeteria.
