Wakanda Elementary
We have just started a school garden at Wakanda and our pleased to already have excellent buy-in from our principal, groundskeeper, teachers, and PTO. At this point, we have built and filled raised beds, but have several outstanding needs: repair of an existing greenhouse, construction of a deer fence, pavement of the area around a wheelchair-accessible bed, and purchase of garden tools and grow lights.
We have already assembled a curriculum with the help of a teacher who is also a Master Gardener. We plan to integrate the garden into the students' curriculum in all grades of the school as well as use the food grown to expand not only their school lunch menu options but also their own exposure to different types of fruits and vegetables. As many of our students are from very low-income families, they are already at higher risk for diet-related illnesses, and the nutritional knowledge gained and exposure to healthy foods could highly impact their future well-being.
