Voorhies Edible School Garden
My name is Nadia Guajardo and I am a 6th grade teacher with Bakersfield City School District. I am writing to you on behalf of Voorhies Elementary, in hopes of rallying support for our new community project of creating an edible garden at our school site. The edible garden will be designed to educate our students about the important practices of horticulture and sustainability through hands-on experience, integrated science-based curriculum, and a collective awareness of the importance of eco-responsibility. Ultimately, this project seeks to empower our urban, socio-economically disadvantaged students to plant the seeds of life in an otherwise desolate, concrete space while promoting healthier eating habits and encouraging active participation and initiative from local families. I feel very passionately about the tremendous impact a school garden would have on our students, our families, and our community.
Your donation will bring us closer to our goal of creating a sustainable, learning garden. We are reaching out to businesses and community leaders, as well as, local educators who understand the tremendous benefits of creating a sustainable garden for children. Our community, our school, and our children are all eager to see this project succeed.
I invite you to be a part of that excitement by supporting our youth with a financial or material donation. Material donations can include wood and building materials, such as: 2x4’s, 2x6’s, 2x8’s, screws, corner brackets, wine barrels, soil, edible plants or seeds, Jasmine vines, marigolds, and lemon or lime trees for our garden planter boxes. All financial donations will be greatly appreciated and publicly acknowledged.
I would like to thank you for considering this opportunity to partner with us in this incredible experience for our children and community. The Voorhies Booster Club tax identification number is 95-6000671. On behalf of our students, parents, and staff, I wish to thank you for your support.
