The Victory Garden at The National WWII Museum
During World War II, while war was raging, on the homefront citizens endured commodities rationing and built victory gardens. These shared sacrifices domestically contributed just as much to the war effort’s eventual success as did military triumphs abroad. Using victory gardens as a focus point, The National WWII Museum demonstrates that the lessons and examples from the World War II homefront are applicable and relevant within today’s society.
Our onsite Victory Garden at The National WWII Museum enriches students and visitors alike. We’ve partnered with the Master Gardeners of Louisiana who helped us design and maintain a garden in a 60’ x 30’ lot on our property. This victory garden engages several community partners and provides educational enrichment with an elementary field trip and family programming throughout the year for children to learn in and from the garden. The garden is similar in look to the original victory gardens, but use current sustainable growing techniques further strengthening the connection between past and present and relevance today.
