About the Program:

As part of our Grade 3 curriculum, all students at this grade level plant, care for and harvest a small existing garden plot ("the Grade 3 Garden") as well as various apple trees on the school property. If we received this grant, part would go to enhancing our Grade 3 garden. Our school purchases organic produce from various farms and natural food stores, but we would like to have enough garden space for the children to harvest and contribute some produce to our classroom snacks, and community harvest soup event, and more. We also have 3 kindergarten classes, and 2 preschool programs at our elementary school. Their play yards have apples trees, and herbs and each year their teachers plant a few vegetables randomly throughout the gardens. The children are brought into tending the gardens and caring for their compost bins. The younger children are also provided an organic snack and lunch as part of their program. Teachers at this level would like to have a dedicated garden plot where they can expand the gardening they already do with their young students. Part of this grant would also support adding new raised beds and tools for the Kindergarten yard.
