About the Program:

The goal for our garden is to use it as a learning experience for students in our elementary school and high school as well as an opportunity for community members to work side-by-side with our students and staff. Students will directly observe the life cycle of plants from seed to vegetable. Planting would take place in late fall and early spring, when school is in session. Raised beds provide a healthier environment for beneficial microorganisms and earthworms because there's no foot traffic to compact the soil. Raised beds also help avoid the time and expense of tilling and will make our large garden space more manageable. High school students taking horticulture would have a unique opportunity to have hands on experience assisting with soil testing and setting up the drip irrigation system.

Another goal is to sample the garden fresh vegetables. Studies show that children who have direct hand in growing and preparing vegetables will taste them, leading them to make healthier food choices.
