About the Program:

Among the many benefits of school gardening, the ultimate goal of the Valley View School District is to utilize the garden to cultivate healthier eating habits in students. Studies show that children who are involved in edible school gardens have increased their daily vegetable and fruit consumption by 2.5 servings per day (American Dietetic Association, 2007). Furthermore, growing and harvesting their own food increases children’s willingness to try new fruits and vegetables and improves their knowledge and attitudes toward these foods. The Valley View Food Service Department would like to extend the opportunity for schools in the district to establish their own edible school garden.

All Valley View School District schools, comprised of 19 schools throughout the Bolingbrook and Romeoville, IL communities, are encouraged to apply for an internal $5K Edible School Garden Grant fully funded by the VVSD Nutrition Services Department.  For more information including the full internal grant, visit www.vvsd.org/food and click on "Edible School Garden Grant".
