About the Program:

The Upland Unified (UUSD) Nutrition Services Program works to create a healthier environment for UUSD students and all children in the city of Upland. A district- wide belief in a whole child approach fuels initiatives taken by both the Upland Unified School District and Nutrition Services Program. Goals of the Nutrition Services department include developing meals with higher nutritional value, ensuring food security for all students, and increasing nutritional education on campus. Through these goals, the Nutrition Services department began a gardening program in 2016 with the simple goal of implementing garden programs in all district schools and a garden in every school. The school gardens provide students with a hands on learning approach through gardening clubs and integration of gardening and academic curriculum and instruction. In UUSD, the school gardens also provide fresh produce to students through a Community Food Producer certification, making it possible for school cafeterias to integrate garden produce into the current menu, and, work with the gardening team to try new recipes featuring fresh garden produce. Through the school garden program, Nutrition Services embodies the district- wide mission statement: “Every Single Student, Every Single Day”.
